The End of the Tour & Tulip Fever

Ketika Danny Elfman menjadi bintang tamu di acara di Disneyland Resort, California, ia diwawancarai dan bercerita bahwa baru saja selesai membuat musik film The End of the Tour. Film drama ini disutradarai oleh James Ponsoldt dan dibintangi oleh Jason Segel dan Jesse Eisenberg. Film ini dibuat berdasarkan buku Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself karya David Lipsky. The End of the Tour akan dirilis tahun 2015 oleh Sony Pictures, belum ada tanggal pastinya.

Good Will Hunting

Situs Movie Wave me-review Good Will Hunting yang baru dirilis oleh Music Box Records, berikut kutipannya:

The relatively brief score offers generally rather low-key accompaniment to the film, the most arresting feature being the Irish tinge thanks to the pennywhistle and a lovely Morricone/The Mission-style motivic fragment that is used incredibly fluidly and serves as the main theme of sorts. These are explored most fully in the opening and closing titles – in between Elfman creates this kind of kaleidoscopic atmosphere which perfectly represents Damon’s character, a genius struggling with everyday life. Fluttering winds are used, there’s sometimes nervous tension from keyboards and percussion, a magical air from an occasional choir. On the surface it’s a little like a subtler precursor to James Horner’s A Beautiful Mind, but whereas Horner was as usual all about emotion with his score, Elfman has a much more intellectual, slightly emotionally distant approach and it serves its film perfectly.

GOOD WILL HUNTING (Expanded)

Music Box Records merilis Good Will Hunting komplit, yay! Song album-nya hanya berisi dua score tracks dan tidak ada score album, adanya hanya Good Will Hunting Oscar Promo yang terbatas. MBR merilis complete score-nya plus lagu-lagu dari Elliott Smith, berikut kutipannya:

Music Box Records presents the complete score for Good Will Hunting (1997) by Danny Elfman. The film won two Oscars (one for Robin Williams and one for the writers) while it was nominated for another seven statuettes, including one for composer Danny Elfman and one for songwriter Elliott Smith.

Danny Elfman is of course best known for his Tim Burton movies (ranging from the director’s two Batman films to more recent affairs like Alice in Wonderland), but the composer has numerous other directors with whom he works regularly. Good Will Hunting marked the second collaboration between Elfman and Gus Van Sant (the first one being the director’s bitingly satirical To Die For, 1995); the relationship later extended to other films like Psycho (1998), Milk (2008), Restless (2011) and Promised Land (2012). Their collaboration on Good Will Hunting proved to be the most elusive of the bunch even though it brought Elfman the first Oscar nomination in his career.

The music for Good Will Hunting is a far cry from the usual Gothic sound of the composer who proves himself to be more than capable when it comes to scoring a deeply personal story. The music features acoustic guitar, piano, a smaller ensemble of strings and woodwinds plus a light choral effect in addition to some Irish sounding whistles that address the Boston setting of the story. From the Main Title to the End Titles (previously known as "Weepy Donuts"), Elfman’s music is mingling among minimalistic thematic variations the same way the titular Will Hunting is looking for a purpose in life…

Good Will Hunting has always been one of the great missing links in Elfman’s discography. The original soundtrack clearly favored the songs by Elliott Smith (and other artists) while Elfman’s work was represented with only two tracks. Although Miramax issued a rare Academy promo for members of the organization, that disc only contained selected highlights and Smith’s Oscar-nominated Miss Misery. Music Box Records presents the complete release of the score, including more Elfman music than what the promo contained, plus six compositions performed by Elliott Smith. The landmark release of this Oscar-nominated gem is supplemented with an 12-page booklet featuring expert commentary by Daniel Schweiger.

Restless

Tanggal 7 Desember kemarin, Movie Wave me-review Restless, berikut kutipannya:

While it’s a relatively simple score – mostly played by a small ensemble, often featuring guitars and little else, sometimes a piano, sometimes xylophone or marimba – it must have been tricky to find the right tone, avoiding maudlin sentiment, avoiding Hollywood romance. The composer pulls it off expertly – it doesn’t just avoid those things, it avoids taking an overly stylised “quirky” sound, which is often what happens when a film composer tries to be clever on a film like this.

The bulk of the music is made up of very pleasant, very attractive melodies. There is whimsy, certainly, but never excessively. And there are quirky touches, for sure – it’s hard not to think of Thomas Newman (and specifically Six Feet Under) at times. But this is music that is full of, of all things, life. It’s full of the excitement of young people growing up, coming of age. The instrumental choices make the music always feel close to the heart, the homely instruments providing an instant connection between audience and characters. A couple of cues have a full string section, but even in them there’s no excessive sentiment. Only briefly, towards the end of the score, does the music take a slightly darker turn – and it still resolves to something lighter. Restless is clearly not a major score in Elfman’s career, but despite being one of his most low key it’s actually one of his loveliest.

'Hunger Games' Soundtrack Producer Reveals Truth About The Music You Never Heard

Tanggal 18 November yang lalu, MTV News melaporkan hasil obrolan mereka dengan T Bone Burnett, berikut kutipannya:

Burnett had originally began work on the soundtrack with composer Danny Elfman, known for his work on Tim Burton's "Batman" movies, Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" and many other films. The two planned on creating a futuristic sound with the help of Arcade Fire's Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, but that work was, according to Burnett, cut short when director Gary Ross decided to change things up on the soundtrack.

"Danny Elfman and I were collaborating on it, and we were working with Arcade Fire. We had written several really beautiful pieces," Burnett said. "The director wanted to take over the music, so he fired Danny. He sort of stopped this process in the middle, which is a bummer. It really is because Danny was some beautiful [music]." Burnett's take on the event differ from the official reports, including a confirmation from Entertainment Weekly, that Elfman has dropped out due to a conflict in his schedule.
