At 77, Original Score Is Oscar's Smallest Field

Berita tanggal 29 Desember 2010 ni, tentang film-film yang memenuhi syarat untuk mendapat nominasi Oscar. Memenuhi syarat antara lain kebanyakan menggunakan musik lama, kebanyakan lagu dan termasuk juga bahwa score-nya di-submit ke juri AMPAS. Patoet diperhatikan bahwa ada dua dari tiga score Danny Elfman yang masuk ke dalam daftar ini yaitu Alice in Wonderland dan The Next Three Days. Score Danny Elfman yang tidak masuk adalah The Wolfman which I think is the best from the three, what a shame..

Last week came news that the musical scores for "True Grit," "Black Swan," "The Kids Are All Right" and "The Fighter" had been ruled ineligible by the Academy's music branch, either for using too much pre-existing music or for relying too heavily on songs.

Now that Academy voters have received the list of scores that did qualify, we can add "Toy Story 3" to the list of high-profile scores that aren't in the running – not because the branch ruled it ineligible, but because composer Randy Newman opted not to submit it.

Notable composers whose work isn't on the Oscar list: Harry Gregson-Williams for "Unstoppable," Desplat for "Tamara Drewe" and Dario Marianelli for "Agora."

Elfman finds challenge in 'Wonderland'

Pada tanggal 15 Desember, Jon Burlingame di situs Variety menurunkan tulisan mengenai pembuatan musik Alice in Wonderland dan The Next Three Days oleh Danny Elfman. Berikut kutipannya:

Scoring "The Next Three Days" with director Paul Haggis "was really quite opposite," Elfman says. The Russell Crowe action film had a limited music budget, "which I turned into something positive," he adds. "I was happy to have a smaller ensemble."

He added piano and strings to his own studio-created percussion and other sounds and was surprised to discover that Haggis preferred the smaller string grouping (13 or 14 players) for its more intimate sound. "It was a dream," he says.

Predictions For This Year's Original Score Nominations

Pada tanggal 21 November, Scott Bettencourt dari situs FSM mem-publish artikel mengenai prediksi score yang akan mendapat nominasi Oscar di acara 2011 83rd Academy Awards 25 Januari nanti (acaranya 27 Februari 2011), berikut kutipan untuk bagian Danny Elfman:

ALICE IN WONDERLAND - Danny Elfman
PROS: This 13th collaboration between Elfman and director Tim Burton is the highest grossing film of their quarter-century partnership, and is the kind of symphonic fantasy score that Music Branch members tend to favor. Elfman's "Alice" theme is one of the most memorable melodies of the film music year.
CONS: Only one Elfman-Burton score has ever received an Oscar nomination (Big Fish). Elfman's score wasn't singled out in many of the reviews, which were mixed to negative overall.
THE ODDS: Fair

THE NEXT THREE DAYS - Danny Elfman
PROS: The director is Paul Haggis, whose first film, Crash, was the 2005 Best Picture winner. It stars Oscar winner Russell Crowe, and Elfman himself is a four-time nominee.
CONS: It's a suspense thriller, a genre that rarely gets attention from the Music Branch.
THE ODDS: Poor

'Alice' Is a Billionaire!

Tanggal 27 Mei kemarin, Box Office Mojo merilis artikel mengenai pendapatan dari film Alice in Wonderland yang menembus 1 milyar dollar pada hari itu.


Sebelumnya hanya ada lima film yang pendapatan dari seluruh dunianya lebih dari 1 milyar dollar: Avatar (composer: James Horner), Titanic (James Horner), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Howard Shore), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Hans Zimmer) dan The Dark Knight (Hans Zimmer dan James Newton Howard). Tentu saja ini film pertama Danny Elfman yang menembus 1 milyar dollar, Alice in Wonderland adalah film Elfman paling laku saat ini. Film Elfman terlaku sebelumnya adalah Spider-Man dengan pendapatan 821,7 juta dollar.
