As for the score itself, it’s a great deal like the ones for the first two films. The M.I.B. theme appears plenty of times to remind you of what you’re watching, the lyrical Kay music makes an appearance, and there are plenty of action tracks that mirror those employed in the earlier outings. Electric guitar is more prominent this time, but there isn’t a whole lot else that reflects the shift to the earlier period in the story.

The album highlight is probably the main title sequence; in about five minutes, Elfman sets up the opening, introduces the main theme, and transitions straight into the underscore. After that, much of the disc is a groovy action-adventure score that picks up momentum and diversity as it goes—fans may actually prefer popping this score into their players rather than revisiting the earlier two. “Under the Bridge” and “The Mission Begins” deliver great action music, while “Mission Accomplished” presents more of the touching Kay music. A key change for the melody moves us into “A Close One,” which in turn gives way to the primary M.I.B. theme. The final track is a“revisited” version of the main titles with female chorus and guitar improvisation against the rhythmic motif of the main theme. The piece feels like an “alternate” version bonus and ends without much fanfare.

June Soundtrack Picks

Film Music Magazine merekomendasi soundtrack untuk bulan Juni 2012, termasuk Men in Black 3, berikut kutipannya:

Who ya gonna call when it’s time to bust some illegal aliens? The answer of course for team Tommy and Will is Danny Elfman, who dons his dark sunglasses and suit to hit the trail with the Men in Black. That proves to be a real charm the third time out for this time-travelling entry that gives a huge, rejuvenating boost to the franchise after an unholy second film (not that Elfman’s music has ever been worse for the wear). Time travel’s the McGuffin that brings Agent J and K back to the 60’s to stop another alien plot to blast the Earth, a period that Elfman acknowledges with an acid rock electric guitar, while saluting the 1950’s retro bug-eyed monster premise with humorous use of the ooo-wee-ooo Theremin. But mostly, this score doesn’t fix what was never broken, relying once again on a great main theme to power through its frenetic action, along with the bongos of Will Smith’s unaging urban hipness. Elfman is at his best when handling satirical genre pics like this, “Hellboy 2” and “Dark Shadows,” bringing on the glee of a kid playing cowboy in a room full on creature suits, an energy which reaches new, delirious heights here while never letting us forget the planet’s in truly dramatic peril. At once bewaring its alien rogues gallery while luxuriating in the choral magic of the nicer E.T.’s, Elfman also manages some truly touching flute and guitar emotion in the ties that bind J and K through the decades, a nice shot of character feeling that makes “MIB3” human after all.

The first time I met Danny I was intimidated. I had to walk through a spooky dark forest to get to his house. I was meeting one of my favorite composers of film scores, and I was about to hear the first cues he had written for Men in Black. (I won't mention his stuffed cat).

Danny's initial music was everything I wasn't looking for. It was light, breezy and funny. After taking a long breath, I told him what I hoped he'd do for the film: "Make MIB more manly. More emotional. Don't help me with the comedy. Please."

Danny got it instantly. His score for Men in Black was everything I hoped it would be. He made MIB feel big and muscular. His score for MIB3 is even more. Danny has creatively taken the familiar and made it new and unique. He uses the perfect themes from the first movie, and makes them new, hip, energetic and emotional.

In addition to writing a fantastic score, Danny is just great to work with. Smart, easy, friendly, funny, relaxed, surprisingly ego-less, and brilliant.

Men In Black 3 by Danny Elfman (Review)

Danny Elfman is one of the greatest film composer's working today and he is indeed a very thematic composer. His scores usually are headlined by strong attention grabbing themes, and that is especially true for Men In Black. The first Men In Black was a wonderful film with a signature Elfman score. However, like most studio-pushed sequels the experience gets stretched way too thin. For this third outing Elfman's music still has energy, but it has definitely lost some steam. 

I don't want to say that this score feels phoned in, but it does leave much to be desired. It doesn't have the wonder, mischief and mysterious flavors of the original or even the second one. I can't say I didn't enjoy hearing that sonic world again, but it would have been a lot more interesting if Elfman built more out of it than just pulled over the familiar.

Soundtrack review: Danny Elfman goes wild on ‘Men In Black 3’

While the new score yields remnants of the traditional “MiB” theme, as well as the standard Elfman-isms – dark, mirthful rhythmic mayhem spawned by “Beetlejuice” and “Batman” – he still finds a way to think outside the box and create a near-new sound palette for “Men In Black 3.” He incorporates a spatial romantic sensation in the string work, which vaguely harkens “Mars Attacks.” And the score is much more lyrical than any of his non-musical scores, and that conceptual style of music composition reads almost like a cross between Elfman’s 2006 solo album “Serenada Schizophrana” and the 1994 album “Boingo.”

There is a distinct band-like atmosphere throughout “Men In Black 3,” which is primarily the result of a drum kit, the predominant expressiveness of percussion, and the atmospherically jolting use of electric guitar. He also makes solid use of Carl Stalling-inspired brass arrangements that gives the score an edge of cartoon-iness that warps your sense of reality – those moments of pure, psycho-imaginative Elfman that keep you on the edge of your seat. The “Men In Black 3” score seems to bear an underlying sense of rejuvenation that really hasn’t bled to the surface since 2008’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.”

Where Men In Black 3 succeeds most, believe it or not, are actually the rock-influenced moments; the sequences anchored by divebombing electric guitar and up-tempo drumming which-although only appearing for brief moments at a time-are easily the most fresh and attention-grabbing moments of the score.

Elsewhere, most of Men In Black 3 (see: "Griffin Steps Up" and "The Prize") is par-for-the-course, classic Elfman; an expected exercise in excellence from a man who, at this point, can almost always be trusted to deliver the goods.

As far as I am concerned, Men In Black 3 is the best one yet with a lot more antics and fun. It feels like the score has grown up and this is what we deserve from Men In Black and Danny Elfman. Some might not like the guitarwork while others prefer then previous scores, but I definitely enjoyed this.

Barry Sonnenfeld Declares ‘Men in Black III’ a Return to Form

I thought the second film was missing a Vincent D'Onofrio, a villain who had real menace to him and raised the stakes. Would you say Jemaine Clement brings that back?

Well, yes, thank you for asking me that. For one, on the second movie, I think we forgot to pay attention to having a really strong villain. D'Onofrio was fantastic, because he was both menacing and also very funny because he was so frustrated by earth. In this movie, Jemaine is an incredibly good villain. For one, Rick Baker's makeup, which took Jemaine four and a half hours every morning to put on, really turned Jemaine from the nicest human being you'll ever meet into someone who both looks and acts really scary. He's a really mean and great-looking villain. We learned from the second one and are back to have a really strong villain. In fact, Danny Elfman, who did the score on all three movies, is huge Jemaine Clement fan and loves every moment of Flight of the Concords. The first time I showed him Men in Black III, he said, "That villain is fantastic. Who is he?" I said his name was Jemaine Clement, and he said "no way." Danny Elfman not recognizing one of his musical idols was very satisfying.

Danny did a fantastic job on the score, with it being reminiscent of the first movie, but also new and hip. Also, by going to 1969, it allowed me to have a lot of really great music from the era. However, some of the music I chose is not so much pop, but Velvet Underground, Cream, and a Rolling Stones I had never heard before called 2,000 Lightyears From Home, and it's a fantastic song.

Engel: Guiding film music's cream of the crop

Engel got her start in the biz as tour manager for Oingo Boingo, beginning an affiliation with lead singer Danny Elfman that continues to this day as his agent.

"A career highlight for me this year was co-producing the recently released epic, 16-CD 'Danny Elfman & Tim Burton 25th Anniversary Music Box' with Warner Bros. Records," she says. Elfman, who worked on a number of upcoming releases including "Men in Black 3," "The Hunger Games" (with T Bone Burnett) and "Dark Shadows," moved into new territory by composing the music for Cirque du Soleil's "Iris."

Danny Elfman upcoming projects include Real Steel, Men in Black 3

Ada satu (tepatnya dua) hal yang mungkin terlewat ketika membaca berita Tim Burton & Danny Elfman Music Box yang heboh. Di bagian "about Danny Elfman" dari press release Warner Bros. Records, tercantum upcoming projects-nya dan tercantum di sana Real Steel dan Men in Black 3. Mengenai keterlibatan Elfman di Men in Black 3 sudah dapat diperkirakan namun pengumuman mengenai Real Steel ini adalah hal yang baru. Baca press release-nya di sini.


Real Steel berasal dari cerita pendek karya Richard Mateson mengenai olahraga tinju di masa datang. Cerpen ini pernah diadaptasi menjadi salah satu episode seri TV The Twilight Zone tahun 1963. Film ini diproduksi oleh antara lain DreamWorks SKG, dan produsernya antara lain Shawn Levy yang juga menjadi sutradaranya, kemudian Steven Spielberg dan juga Robert Zemeckis. Tokoh utamanya diperankan oleh Hugh Jackman. Real Steel akan dirilis tanggal 18 November 2011.


Shawn Levy selalu berpasangan dengan composer Christophe Beck untuk semua filmnya termasuk film terakhirnya Date Night yang baru-baru ini diputar, kecuali dua film: Night at the Museum dan Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian yang kedua musiknya dibuat oleh Alan Silvestri. Real Steel akan menjadi pertama kalinya Elfman bekerja sama dengan Shawn Levy tapi belum tentu terjadi karena waktu rilisnya masih setahun lebih dari sekarang.


Berbeda dengan Men in Black 3, film ini akan menjadi kerja sama Elfman dengan sutrada Barry Sonnenfeld untuk ketiga kalinya dan akan menjadi trilogi pertama Elfman (musik Spider-Man 3 dibuat oleh Christopher Young sehingga gagal menjadi trilogi pertama Elfman).
