Barry Sonnenfeld Declares ‘Men in Black III’ a Return to Form

Sutradara Men in Black 3, Barry Sonnenfeld diwawancarai dan berikut kutipannya mengenai Danny Elfman:
I thought the second film was missing a Vincent D'Onofrio, a villain who had real menace to him and raised the stakes. Would you say Jemaine Clement brings that back?
Well, yes, thank you for asking me that. For one, on the second movie, I think we forgot to pay attention to having a really strong villain. D'Onofrio was fantastic, because he was both menacing and also very funny because he was so frustrated by earth. In this movie, Jemaine is an incredibly good villain. For one, Rick Baker's makeup, which took Jemaine four and a half hours every morning to put on, really turned Jemaine from the nicest human being you'll ever meet into someone who both looks and acts really scary. He's a really mean and great-looking villain. We learned from the second one and are back to have a really strong villain. In fact, Danny Elfman, who did the score on all three movies, is huge Jemaine Clement fan and loves every moment of Flight of the Concords. The first time I showed him Men in Black III, he said, "That villain is fantastic. Who is he?" I said his name was Jemaine Clement, and he said "no way." Danny Elfman not recognizing one of his musical idols was very satisfying.
Danny did a fantastic job on the score, with it being reminiscent of the first movie, but also new and hip. Also, by going to 1969, it allowed me to have a lot of really great music from the era. However, some of the music I chose is not so much pop, but Velvet Underground, Cream, and a Rolling Stones I had never heard before called 2,000 Lightyears From Home, and it's a fantastic song.

Soundtrack Review: Dark Shadows (2012)

Berikut kutipannya:
I have to admit, during the first seconds of ‘Dark Shadows – Prologue’ I thought I had mistakenly put in my Bob Cobert CD from the television series Dark Shadows. The sound is unmistakable, but that’s where the similarities end (mostly). Step up the real Danny Elfman! From around 4:20 and onwards is the best part where he admittedly stals a little from his excellent Wolfman score, but it sounds better than ever with power and the choir. It has a bit of fun too and cues like ‘Shadows Reprise’ shows off some excellent sound design with some amazing synth work combined with a catchy theme.
The score has lot of great cues and there isn’t a weak cue among them.
Well, not to state the bleeding obvious, but I enjoyed this score a lot. It has a little bit of Bob Cobert in there which ties it nicely to the original TV series and then it’s mostly all Elfman and his excellent take on gothic horror.

American Youth Symphony Presents Danny Elfman Project

Berikut kutipannya:

His credits include the four Oscar-nominated films Milk, Good Will Hunting, Big Fish and Men in Black, along with Edward Scissorhands, Wanted, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mission: Impossible, Planet of the Apes, A Simple Plan, To Die For, Spider-Man (1 & 2), Batman, Dolores Claiborne, Sommersby, Chicago, Dick Tracy, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Alice in Wonderland; as well as the famous themes for television series The Simpsons and Desperate Housewives. For more than 25 years, Burton and Elfman have collaborated on some of the cinema's most beloved and recognizable films and soundtracks, including Big Fish, for which Elfman received an Oscar® nomination; Beetlejuice; Batman; Edward Scissorhands; Sleepy Hollow; Corpse Bride; and, more recently, Alice in Wonderland.
"Tim had some specific ideas about the music on Dark Shadows," says Elfman. "I knew that the bigger dramatic scenes would be played in a rather grand theatrical manner, but the real treat was tapping into the retro pallet Tim had imagined. He wanted something that payed homage to both the original TV series and other '70s horror genres as well. For that we kept it minimal, eerie, and atmospheric with only electronics and a few solo instruments carrying the melodies."
Elfman has also received Oscar® nominations for his scores for Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black, and Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting and Milk. Movie audiences worldwide have also heard Danny Elfman's unique sound and style in some 80 film scores, including Sam Raimi's Spider-Man; Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible; Martin Brest's Midnight Run; Jon Amiel's Sommersby; the Hughes Brothers' Dead Presidents; Rob Marshall's Academy® Award-winning Chicago; and Shawn Levy's Real Steel.

Dark Shadows Original Score

Studio: Village Roadshow Pictures, GK Films, Infinitum Nihil, Warner Bros (distributor)
Sutradara: Tim Burton
Composer: Danny Elfman
Tanggal rilis film: 11 Mei 2012
Tanggal rilis album: 8 Mei 2012
Label: Watertower Music

Dark Shadows dibuat berdasarkan soap opera tahun '60-an berisi makhluk-makhluk horor gothic seperti vampir, monster, nenek sihir, werewolves, hantu, dan zombi.

Jadwal film Danny Elfman di tahun 2013 adalah Oz: The Great and Powerful (8 Maret 2013) dan Leafmen (17 Mei 2013).

Film Music Magazine March Soundtrack Picks

Daniel Schweiger di situs Film Music Magazine merekomendasikan musik Danny Elfman untuk Planet of The Apes yang baru dirilis La-La Land Records, berikut kutipannya:

Danny Elfman has often played primal aggressiveness for director Tim Burton in such rampaging scores as “Sleepy Hollow” and “Mars Attacks.” But none of their collaborations would grab the composer’s furious instincts like Burton’s redo for “Planet of the Apes.” Sure Jerry Goldsmith had the percussive idea first when he accompanied Charlton Heston into The Forbidden Zone, but leave it to Danny Elfman to run rampant with those animalistic beats and ethnic wind instruments. While the orchestra is ever present here, it’s a swirling, unbound beast, with anything resembling pleasant melody hosed down in a cage until the climax. Grinding, pounding, screaming brass is the thrust of this “Ape” score, an approach that definitely makes this at times near-dissonant “Planet” soundtrack its own, assaultive animal in the franchise’s cannon, and the one that arguably best conveys the most nightmarish aspects of a future man never reckoned on making.

Filmtracks announces its 2011 award nominees and winners

Berikut kutipannya:

Top Film Scores:
• La Ligne Droite (The Straight Line) (Patrick Doyle)

• The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (John Williams)
• The Greatest Miracle (Mark McKenzie)
• Priest (Christopher Young)
• Real Steel (Danny Elfman)

• Soul Surfer (Marco Beltrami)

The nominees this year were relatively easy to determine, the strength of the field demanding the sixth nomination slot that Filmtracks reserves for abnormally solid years. Selecting the winner was extremely challenging, however, only The Greatest Miracle not competing with its peers. To break the tie, all of these films were viewed carefully to account for the impact of the music in context. After this process was completed, it became clear that Doyle's La Ligne Droite and Elfman's Real Steel had the most substantial impact on their films, the former slightly edging the latter because of its remarkable efficiency given such a small ensemble.

Top Film Cues:
• Real Steel (Danny Elfman) "Final Round"

• The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (John Williams) "Sir Francis and the Unicorn"
• Black Gold (James Horner) "Phantom Army"
• Dream House (John Debney) "Dream House End Credits"
• The Greatest Miracle (Mark McKenzie) "Ascension/Gloria Patri"
• Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (Alexandre Desplat) "Statues"
• Hugo (Howard Shore) "Winding It Up"
• La Ligne Droite (The Straight Line) (Patrick Doyle) "Stadium Memories"
• Mars Needs Moms (John Powell) "Gribble's Loss"
• Peak: The Rescuers (Naoki Sato) "Kyuushutsu"
• Priest (Christopher Young) "Fanfare for a Resurrected Priestess"
• Real Steel (Danny Elfman) "Safe With Me"

• Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Patrick Doyle) "Off You Go"
• Soul Surfer (Marco Beltrami) "Back in the Water"
• Soul Surfer (Marco Beltrami) "Half Pint Boards"
• Super 8 (Michael Giacchino) "Letting Go"
• The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (Carter Burwell) "A Wolf Stands Up"
• War Horse (John Williams) "Dartmoor, 1912"
• Water for Elephants (James Newton Howard) "The Circus Sets Up"
• W.E. (Abel Korzeniowski) "Dance for Me Wallis"

This category was extremely difficult to resolve for 2011, the generally high quality of the year as a whole for film music forcing a plethora of difficult choices. After viewing most of the films represented by these contenders, this award came down to three cues that had a tremendous impact upon their scenes: "Stadium Memories" from Doyle's La Ligne Droite, "Final Round" from Elfman's Real Steel, and "Kyuushutsu" ("Rescue") from Sato's Peak: The Rescuers. All three are represented by altered edits on their album releases, though "Final Round" from Real Steel is arguably superior in its film arrangement, giving it the slight advantage over the other two. Any one of these three cues could have won this award, and if a three-way tie were possible, that may have been the best choice.

Planet of the Apes (2001) (Expanded Edition) Music By Danny Elfman

Situs Examiner me-review rilis Planet of the Apes dari La-La Land Records, berikut kutipannya:

In revisiting Planet of the Apes, ten years later as a whole, it stands out as a solid score that is definitely alot better than alot of scores that have been released in recent years despite the fact that isn't quite as memorable. Yet, the production values and Elfman's tireless and laborious efforts on it, still make this an album worth getting.

Cirque du Soleil plans one-time-only Oscar piece

The three-minute performance at the Oscars on Feb. 26 will be among the international troupe's biggest yet, said Cirque du Soleil special events director Yasmine Khalil, featuring more than 50 artists.

Cirque du Soleil has a Hollywood-themed show now at the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars will be presented, but the performance for the awards telecast is "unique for this one evening" and not taken from any of the troupe's 22 productions playing around the world. After the Oscar show, the performance won't be presented anywhere again.

"The theme is very much in line with paying tribute to the movie-theater experience," Khalil said, adding it was different from "Iris," Cirque's show at the Kodak Theater, which is billed as "a journey into the world of cinema."

Like "Iris," the music for the troupe's Oscar performance was composed by Danny Elfman.

Award-winning composer-lyricist Schwartz talks about his hit musical

Q: Danny Elfman was originally going to compose for "Houdini." How did you end up on the project?

A: I've had some meetings over time with the team trying to put it together. But it was only recently with the arrival of Aaron Sorkin as book writer that it really started to come together, and particularly was attractive to me because I'm such a huge admirer of his work. A picture like "Moneyball" might not be at first glance a topic that everybody in the world is interested in, but it was so well-written. He's just such a good writer, and when he takes on a project, he finds a way to make it really interesting and surprising and thought-provoking.

Q: How far along are you?

A: Basically we have worked out an outline. Just as with "Wicked," it took quite a while to figure out what the story was, and I think we have a pretty good handle on that now. And we're just starting to write. I actually have not written a note or a lyric yet.

Soundtrax: Episode 2012-1

WOLFMAN was one of those Hollywood projects where there are a lot of people involved in a process and they can't agree on a shared vision. When I joined the fray the movie had already been in postproduction for, I think, two years, so I was at the very end of this whole process at which point the various parties hadn’t been able to find one way of finishing this movie. I don't want to go too much into details about it but I was chosen by one of the parties to create a score for the movie that would make it more attractive to younger audiences. That's what I did and then apparently the decision was made that they wanted to be more of a classic movie rather than one directed toward younger audiences and that's what was eventually released. For me, it was a job like any other. There was some good music that will never see the light of day that was produced for it but that's how it goes. As long you get compensated for your work, I don't mind that that's part of this inexact process that happens in any creative sphere when you try things out. Ultimately somebody will have to make a decision and say this is how we’re positioning this movie, and that's what they decided for this one.

Berikut ini kutipan untuk Real Steel:

Elfman’s score is able to shoulder its way through a bunch of rap and rock songs (which are available on a separate songtrack album from Interscope) to really embellish the story’s warm heart with an engaging score. The action/battle moments are occupied by fairly typical slams of rockem, sockem percussive/brass/synth, but through it all Elfman’s subtler, humanistic melodies are woven, which personifies the human element behind the battling cyberbots and exemplifies the heartening father-son relationship that is restored through the competitive robot boxing process. Aside from the brass and electronically-infused percussion, Elfman employs acoustic guitar runs (“It’s Your Choice,” “Safe With Me,”), gentle female voice (“Why We’re Here,”) or both (“Bonding,” “Parkway Motel”), and a lovely string-and-piano wistful family theme (“Safe With Me,” “You Deserve Better”) to underscore the father-son reunion which is the film’s real story (as well as the developing romance between Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly’s characters, as well as the film’s underlying Americana vibe. The score’s main hero theme (“Charlie Trains Atom,” “Atom Versus Twin Cities,” the second half of “You Deserve Better”) reflects both the restored sparring robot Atom and the young lad who restores both Atom and his ex-boxer father’s dignity. The configuration of the main theme’s first six notes recall the opening tune of Neil Diamond’s song “Shiloh,” which is initially a slight distraction and certainly coincidental, but Elfman takes the melody elsewhere after that and formulates it into an energetic, cheer-inducing victory anthem as underbot Atom wins round after round against the bullybots, culminating in the happy triumph of “People’s Champion.” It’s also arranged into a variation for acoustic guitar, set among the family theme and voice melodies, in the poignant “Taking A Beating.” I found REAL STEEL to be an unexpectedly very good movie with terrific action, effects, and a true heart. Danny Elfman’s score augments its dignity and emotional grounding with a fine score that honestly conveys its sense of family affinity and celebration.

Real Steel

Situs Main Titles me-review score album dari Real Steel, berikut kutipannya:

Elfman has been doing diverse projects for a while now, and when listening to Real Steel one will not immediately hear Danny's voice in it, which for better or worse will please or displease a lot of people. On the other hand, Real Steel's to the point and fairly straightforward, making it also a lot easier to like.

So Real Steel is not such a demanding score, but it does make for an entertaining listen. Danny Elfman has scared some people with his occasional quirky scores, but Real Steel is not that at all. On the contrary, it's straightforward and it barely contains his usual voice (only the use of choir hints us of his presence). Plus I see this score working very easily inside the movie, and from what I've read the movie's quite the straightforward winner too. So, why do it difficult if one can be thoroughly entertaining and easy instead?

Jackman sets Broadway return

Capitalizing on Hugh Jackman's recent B.O.-busting Broadway stint, producers of developing tuner "Houdini" have confirmed the show as Jackman's next Main Stem project, targeting a 2013-14 opening for the new musical with a score by Stephen Schwartz and book by Aaron Sorkin. Jack O'Brien is onboard to helm.

Project has been brewing for a couple of years, but Jackman's rumored attachment hadn't been officially confirmed before. Danny Elfman was previously onboard to provide the tunes.

Composer Alexandre Desplat Talks EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE, HARRY POTTER, TWILIGHT, Wes Anderson and MOONRISE KINGDOM, and More

It's a really really good interview. Berikut kutipan wawancaranya:

What is the score that you did not write in the last year or two that you absolutely love and wished you had done it?
I like The Hours a lot, I think it's a great score. I love what Danny did on Milk, I think that was a really great score and very different from his big Marvel films that he does so well, so brilliantly. He's a fantastic.. I also like his call for Alice, it's a beautiful score.. (inaudible). I love what Thomas Newman did for Revolutionary Road, it was a beautiful score. Going back, I could say Javier Navarrete score for Pan's Labyrinth was stunning. Way back, John Williams' Geisha, John Williams' Catch Me If You Can which should have won everything, I think. His opening title is forever. It's forever, just for that he should have had the Oscar, just for that. Genius.

Chat with Danny Elfman, film and 'Iris' composer, on Dec. 16

Will there be an Oingo Boingo reunion?
There will never be an Oingo Boingo reunion, I'm sad to say. The 17 years I had with them were good, but I sustained too much hearing damage during those years and I have to leave it behind me now if I want to continue writing music. Sadly I'm no Beethoven. Sorry, need to use my ears.

Can you tell me how Hitchcock has influenced your music? How has Bernard Herrmann had an influence on you as a composer?
Hitchcock was a huge influence. His composer was named Bernard Herrmann and he was my original inspiration and began my love of film music.

Can you comment on your Gong Show experience?
The Gong Show was a fun goof. We did it twice, but intended to get gonged and never did. We won instead, so we stopped going on.

What scoring software you prefer to work with?
I work on Digital Performer. I know they all have their advantages and disadvantages but this is the one that works the best for me.

What was the first film score you heard that sparked your interest in becoming a composer? Was it a Herrmann score?
It was "The Day The Earth Stood Still".

What kind of inspiration do you derive from working with someone with the enthusiasm and unique perspective as a filmmaker like Tim Burton?
Tim has given me great leeway to explore many different genres and styles. He's also given me a long leash to work on, allowing me a lot of creative flexibility.

How much of your music for films is synthesized and how much is done by the actual musician and instrument? Strings for instance. And how much of the score do you write out versus just play as you know what you want?
While writing any individual cue, I do a complete mock-up for the director with all the parts as close as possible to how he may hear the finished music. Once it's approved, all percussion and synthesized parts remain and all the strings, brass and winds get replaced with the real orchestra which sounds much better than the samples.

When you score for a movie, do you come to the project with an idea already? Or do you let the movie dictate the direction? How much influence does the director have on the score?
The director is GOD. The director has total say in what I can or cannot do and if the experience is creative, expressive, fun, or miserable.

Has the way that you write music or your methodology changed in the way that you write music for film versus being in a band? Or do you feel you approach it in a similar fashion?
No connection to writing for film and being in the band. In fact, it was a hindrance I had to overcome. Writing songs has verses and choruses, in film music one has to let all that style of construction go.

What is your process for composing for a film?
My process is simple but without method. I just watch the film a lot and absorb it as best I can and wait for something to happen...

Little Demons? Any chance it will ever see the light of day?
Who knows anything can happen in this world.

There's lots of curiosity here about your work with Tim Burton. Why do your sensibilities match up so well?
Tim and I grew up on a lot of the same influences, mostly horror, fantasy and sci-fi from all over the world. We grew up in an era where all kids had access to all of this stuff all around them. Every weekend two new movies at every local theater. It was a great time to grow up on film. We probably saw 10x as many films from all over the world as most kids see today.

Will you be scoring the Frankenweenie movie that Burton is directing?
I go immediately to Frankenweenie after finishing Dark Shadows.

How is composing for a live show like Iris different than movie scores. Do you have a preference?
Composing for Iris was unique to anything I had ever done. Very much different from film. writing for the live performers was a unique challenge. Even having written a Ballet, this was very different. All the different performers had different requirements. And making it all work live every night was an unbelievable challenge. But, one of the most personally rewarding things I've ever done.

Please tell us 'Rabbit and Rogue' will be recorded and released.
I'm still trying to find a way to record Rabbit & Rogue. It's difficult, it’s a complicated piece and I hope I get a chance to get it out into the world at some point.

I always wondered why you dropped the Mystic Knights from the Oingo Boingo name. Was it just way too long?
Good question. It was laziness. When I retired the Mystic Knights of The Oingo Boingo, we tried playing with dozens and dozens of different names we very nearly were called "Plan 9", but in the end we just stayed Oingo Boingo.

Do you ever just write from your heart? Unscripted?
I do, but not enough. Writing for Twyla Tharp and for Cirque both gave me a strong desire to do more writing away from film. I intend to begin writing chamber music this year for myself (if I could possibly find some time).

Do you ever compose without any of the instruments and solely the manuscript paper in front of you? Or do you use instruments for creativity?
No I'm afraid not. I write solely by ear. Meaning I have to hear what I'm writing. I know the great "Herrmann" and many other great composers could go straight to paper but alas I cannot. I need at least a keyboard in front of me.

Is there any genre of film you would feel uncomfortable scoring, or that would require additional "homework" or preparation on your part?
Yes, in fact there are things I would feel uncomfortable doing. A contemporary light romantic comedy makes me feel completely lost. And I probably would not take on a contemporary jazz score as I feel I am not properly equipped and wouldn't do it justice.

How do you get though writer's block?
Writer's block? A tough one. simply cannot acknowledge its existence. Or I'd never get anything written. I think the best way to avoid it, is to force yourself to write every day even if you feel you can't. It's like working gears that get stuck. If you start them moving they just might get going again.

In your opinion, what films (without your collaboration) had a score that you felt really made the film?
I don't think any score can make the film. All we can do is enhance what's there. Can't make a crappy movie good. I suppose I could make a good movie crappy???

When you score a film, do you conduct an orchestra for the recording yourself for the non-synthed parts, or do you have someone else record it?
My parts meaning all the funny sounds percussion sounds and non-orchestral sounds are already finished when I'm done writing the cue and need no conducting because I've played them all. For the orchestra, I will never conduct if I can help it. Conducting is a talent to itself and I do not consider myself having that talent. If I conducted it would be for my ego only but not for the good of the music.

You have worked very closely with Tim Burton on so many projects. What would you say are the advantages and disadvantages to working with a single person on so many projects?
The advantage of working with a director multiple times is you know what to expect from them. Not that you know what their movie will be like but half the job of being a film composer is being a psychologist, getting inside a director's head. Having been in there before helps.

What effect have your non-film music had on your film music?
More and more I have come to believe that the non-film music is essential for me to keep my sanity. Working in films only, I have no doubt, would kill me or put me in the nut house.

What film scores are you most proud of when you return back to and listen to them today?
I don't have any single scores that I can say "that was really great". I tend to have moments in many different scores that I'm proud of, usually when I manage to pull off something different than what I had done before.

Do you have an instrument you wish you could be better at?
Yes i'd settle for being good on any musical instrument. I've never really been a musician. I never took lessons on any instrument or stuck with any single instrument. I was always more a jack of all trades master of none.

I know with film scores you have an inspiration to work with and write to but how did you go about writing Serenada Schizophrana, what inspired you to write it?
Writing Seranada was a cathartic experience. It was my first time writing for orchestra away from visual images, and it opened many doors in my mind and possibilities. Certainly something i will continue doing. Time? Time? Time? It’s all about finding the time.

Would you ever consider doing a live performance of some of your film scores?
I've been asked and it’s a hard question. I hate going back over my past music. And to do a concert means putting a lot of energy into that. It's something I may do, but I've always put off. Too many new things on my plate.

What current film composers do you admire?
So many good composers today, can't think of them all. I love Desplat of course, Tom Newman, Mansell, Carter Burwell and many others. This kind of question always makes my mind go blank and gets me into trouble. I'll have ten more as soon as I move on to the next question.
Scorewise, are endings the hardest part to come up with?
No the ending is easy once everything is layed out properly. It’s getting started and finding the themes that's the hard part.

What were your inspirations for writing such dark scores like Batman, Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd?
My inspirations??? I have no idea. I think it’s just a mish mash of everything I've heard, I never know what my inspiration is at any moment when I'm working.

How much time each day do you spend on writing music?
I try to put 12 hours a day if I possibly can. It gets spread out however. I do most of my work at night. and usually write until 1:30 or 2 in the morning.

When you are writing the score to a film, do you already have the piece laid out in your head? Do you have the basic structure or rhythms or melodies already formulated? Or do you just write the music as you go?
The answer to both questions is yes. In the beginning I spend a lot of time working out the themes, components and elements that I'm going to use. When I feel comfortable that I have them, then I go by the seat of my pants, and let the music pretty much run itself. That's the fun part. When I'm working on 8 bars I don't necessarily know what the next 8 bars are going to be. That's the fun part.

During the writing process, how confident are you about the quality of your music. I fear I live in a perpetual state of "My Music isn't Good Enough" Do you ever feel like that?
You are not alone I never feel like my music is good enough when I'm writing it. If I do feel that way, it may be years later.

What has been the most challenging assignment of your career?
I really have to say Iris was the most challenging assignment of my career. What we were attempting to do, had no previous project to use as a model. Combining a full orchestra with "live" cirque was an experiment that we had to invent as we went. There were moments where I felt it was impossible, and probably it wasn't until the official opening that I felt I had not created a complete disaster.

Reed Johnson: Alas, we're out of time. Thank you everyone for the thoughtful questions. And thank you Danny for taking part in our chat today, and for clearly inspiring so many with all your great music!
Danny Elfman: Thanks Reed, thanks everybody. this was really fun. look forward to the next time.

Scrooged Reviews

His score is fun and sometimes funny, but there’s actually a strong dramatic undercurrent through it all, the composer deftly reflecting the difficult relationship the audience needs to have with Murray’s character, hating him but at the same time believing that he could ultimately be turned around.

While the score is a little bit too bitty (it runs for about 33 minutes, made up of 21 tracks, many of those combined from even shorter ones) to be entirely satisfying on album, this new release is still an entertaining one, filling an important gap in the Elfman discography.

Rating-nya tiga setengah bintang, baca lengkapnya di sini. Berikutnya dari Filmtracks, ini kutipannya:

Buy it... if you seek the origination point for many of the holiday and suspense techniques explored with far greater notoriety by Danny Elfman in Batman Returns and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Avoid it... if you have long awaited an official release of this very short score and expect to hear more original music that compares favorably to the five minutes of outstanding, previously released highlights for full orchestra and choir.

While it's great to appreciate the score's lesser known portions on the limited 2011 product, it is difficult to recommend that album to an audience outside of Elfman's most supportive fanbase. There is definitely a sentimental place for this score, but be aware of the brevity of its highlights and full length.

Rating-nya tiga bintang, baca lengkapnya di sini. Trakhir dari Film Music Magazine, berikut kutipannya:

among the soundtracks that have directly dealt with the holiday like “Edward Scissorhands,” “Batman Returns” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Family Man,” “Scrooged” just might take the gonzo antlers.

Elfman’s “Scrooged” score is a fiendish delight, twisting about such holiday favorites as “Dance of the Sugar Plum Ferries” and “Santa Claus is Coming To Town” (along with “It’s Howdy Doody Time” for good measure) into evil Xmas portents.

Scrooged liner notes

Jeff Bond membuat album/sleeve/liner notes untuk Scrooged, here are SOME quotes, edited:

Scrooged would pose a challenge that Elfman had not previously faced. Most of the composer's collaborators up to this point had been younger, more experimental filmmakers for whom Efman had been more or less a peer. Richard Donner was a long-established director, comfortable with studio politics and experienced at working with composers. His prior musical collaborators included Jerry Goldsmith (whose score for Donner’s The Omen on an Academy Award) and John Williams (Superman). Donner had considered approaching Williams for Scrooged and needed to be convinced to use the up-and-coming Elfman.

Elfman’s agent, Richard Kraft made a cassette tape of cues from Beetlejuice, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and even Elfman’s early Forbidden Zone music for Donner: “Richard Donner finally spoke to me about it and I had my day in court to explain why Danny was so great. I eventually got them together and he was sold.”

Finding the proper musical tone on Scrooged would have presented a challenge for even the most experienced composer. The main character had to be seen as heartless, cruel, miserly, tasteless—but redeemable and likable. Earlier takes on the Dickens story all trafficked in macabre visions of ghosts, poverty and heartlessness, but Scrooged employed state-of-the-art makeup and visual effects to convey its horrors, and Donner had to up the ante to convey the shock of Frank Cross’s ultimate redemption to contemporary audiences. But Scrooged was still a comedy, and holiday comedy at that—for all its dark visions of frozen bums, dusty corpses and a man being burned alive, the movie needed to make audiences laugh and ultimately feel good about themselves.

Elfman’s main title immediately impressed Richard Donner. “I remember being on the recording stage on the first cue and all of us looking at each other and thinking, ‘Oh my God, he hit it.’ It was like hearing John Williams doing Superman and Goldsmith doing The Omen. I’ve really been fortunate in the composers I’ve worked with. Danny had a great sense of humor, and he was brilliantly not full of himself when he very well could have been. He was extremely flexible and a delight to work with.”

Donner says that hearing a composer’s original music for the first time can be daunting. “I don’t impose myself on people except just to give my thoughts—I think Danny was quite honestly ahead of us most of the time. But you hear the score in your head and also you do a temp score of ‘what’s the kind of feeling we want and what are you going to do?” and one of the dangers is you fall in love with the temp score. When the composer comes in, it’s difficult because you have a preconceived notion of what the score will be. Sometimes you hear something from the composer that’s so different that you either jump for joy and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” or you try to steer them back to what the temp score sounded like. If I did have moments like that he was extremely cooperative and creative, and if I didn’t, he was way ahead of us.”

Donner’s desire for a “non-comedy” score had been fulfilled. “When you listen to the music from Scrooged,” the director says, “it had incredible overtones and if you just said it was a comedy score, it would be a big mistake—it was a brilliant score and it fit each and every scene and the emotions you were trying to get across, but it wasn’t a comedy score. Comedy scores—especially today—are overly huge and they’re used to punch up a joke or a bad line, but if you really listen to that score, it’s much more than a comedy score. It hits the emotions of Bill Murray’s character. I think Danny is so incredibly versatile—he’s a bit of a genius and he’s obviously proved it over the years.”

97 Original Scores in 2011 Oscar Race

Desplat untuk Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2, The Ides of March dan Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close walau ia sebenarnya di tahun 2011 membuat lima scores plus tema untuk dikembangkan oleh Conrad Pope di My Week With Marilyn.

The Best Scores Of 2011

Who’d have thought that Danny Elfman would do one of his most inspired movie scores for a movie that didn’t really exist- let alone several at the same time? It’s this inventive, stylistic bounty that’s made me give a deserved mulligan to the Elfman soundtracks that you can only see live on stage at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood- home to Cirque Du Soleil’s movies-as-a-circus show “Iris.” With the music sending Cirque’s death-defying performers over audiences’ heads, trampolining off buildings, and contorting themselves into pretzels, Elfman’s work gives new meaning to being “in synch” with these moving human pictures. Ranging from furiously percussive symphonies to music box bells, solo pianos, syncopated voices and swing jazz, “Iris” not only traverses the amazing history of Elfman music with sections reminiscent of “Edward Scissorhands,” “Nightbreed” and “Dick Tracy,” but that of Hollywood scoring itself, with Elfman doing his own spins of “West Side Story”’s finger-snapping jazz to the raging dance ritual of “King Kong.” At once tightly controlled and spur-of-the-second, “Iris” brings out a new sense of invention and freedom from a composer who’s already one of Hollywood’s most inventive performers. “Iris” is a musical high wire act that Elfman pulls off with tremendous energy, and one definitely worth seeing in person.

Scrooged!!!

Berikut kutipannya:

SCROOGED
Music by Danny Elfman
LLLCD 1195
Limited Edition of 3000 units
Retail Price: $19.98

Produced by Dan Goldwasser
Mastered by Mike Matessino
Liner Notes by Jeff Bond
Art Direction by Dan Goldwasser

An important score in Elfman’s cannon, SCROOGED was the composer’s first big-budget Hollywood score – and one that clearly anticipates his next, and most iconic work, BATMAN. For this wickedly funny and inventive update of the immortal Dickens Christmas classic, Elfman fashions a robust, sophisticated musical tapestry that expertly weaves together the film’s varied tones, which runs the gambit from wildly broad comedy and holiday cheer to gothic horror and emotional drama. Produced by Dan Goldwasser and mastered by Mike Matessino, this special release features bonus tracks, source cues and exclusive liner notes from film music writer Jeff Bond, with new comments from Director Richard Donner and others.

Film Music Magazine November Soundtrack Picks

Why Should you buy it?: Don’t expect Elfman’s enraged approach to “Hellboy 2” here, let alone “The Incredible Hulk,” as the composer envisions these behemoths with NASCAR-ready country-western-rock. And that turns out to be just the right, inspired choice for a dad driving his ‘bot from one American rust bowl to the other. While “Steel” starts off with raw, strumming simplicity, Elfman gradually brings in his more recognizable strings lines, heavenly choirs (with a particularly angelic voice provided by Poe) and fighting mad orchestra, with thumping, metal grunge leading to the big moment in the robot ring.

Music Composer Danny Elfman Talks About His Long-Time Collaboration with Tim Burton

Situs Mentorless mentranskripsi obrolan Danny Elfman di acara LACMA, berikut kutipannya:

Some time goes by and Tim comes with Batman. That was considerably a different goal because it was my first and his first big budget film and we were no longer like kids left on their own who could do whatever they want. Nobody cared what we did for Pee-Wee or Beetlejuice but people who invested money, the Studio, did care about Batman. That was when I really learned what film scoring is actually about, the politics, the psychology, the personalities, the difficulty and that it’s not just fun. This was a long difficult road and really the beginning of what was, I feel, my education for film’s scoring.

That was the beginning of a whole different thing because now I’ve got to see Tim really stressed and I got to feel what real stress was about. It’s hard to believe that it was 20 years ago but I believe that’s when my scoring education began, withBatman. That’s when I thought ‘Maybe I like this job and I want to stick with it, take it a little bit more seriously.’ That triggered two decades now. And let’s skip around a bit.

Real Steel by Danny Elfman (Review)

Review dari Film Music Media, rating 3/4, berikut kutipannya:

Ever want to listen to something that is just pure inspiration? Something that is as far away from pretentious scoring as you can get? Well, Real Steel may be for you then. That's what this score is. It's a down to earth story that we've all heard or seen before in some fashion, but that doesn't mean it isn't good. The simple instrumentation makes it feel like a romcom score, but Elfman executes it with such precision that you can't help exposing your heart strings for some tugging. Then we get into the action music. Elfman mixes in strings with some hard electronics to give the score its robotic aggression. The score is all about overcoming the odds and it's an underdog story. So you should go in expecting everything your initial expectations were. The score is good at delivering those great "we did it!" moments, and it gave me some heartwarming chills now and then. I enjoyed it, which is something because I haven't been enjoying non-Burton Danny Elfman lately that much.

Real Steel

Berita lama ni, uhuk... score review dari situs Movie Wave, rating 3/5, berikut kutipannya:

Elfman is a professional, so everything here is technically proficient, some of the tunes are fun, but it doesn’t go beyond what any reasonably-competent film composer might have written – there’s no personality here, only occasional hints that it was actually the work of a composer whose very strong musical personality is actually one of the strongest reasons he’s been so successful and remains so popular. It’s enjoyable fluff, for sure, but fluff nonetheless.
