Kemarin telah diadakan pengumuman para pemenang Academy Awards ke-84. Dalam acara tersebut Cirque du Soleil menampilkan atraksi khusus dengan musik orisinal dari Danny Elfman. Atraksi tersebut diintroduksi oleh Kermit dan Miss Piggy, berikut kutipannya:

IFMCA Winners 2011

Tanggal 23 Februari, International Film Music Critics Association mengumumkan para pemenang penghargaannya, berikut kutipannya:

The International Film Music Critics Association announces the winners of its eighth annual awards for excellence in musical scoring in 2011 with John Williams’ score for Steven Spielberg’s WAR HORSE topping the list, winning Film Score of the Year, Best Score for a Drama Film and Individual Cue for “The Homecoming.” Williams also wins Composer of the Year and Best Score for an Animated Film for THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN. French composer Ludovic Bource wins Breakout Composer of the Year for his score to THE ARTIST.

Cliff Martinez wins Best Score for an Action/Adventure/Thriller Film for Nicolas Winding Refn’s DRIVE. Best Score for a Comedy Film is given to THE RUM DIARY by Christopher Young. Michael Giacchino wins his 11th career award for JJ Abrams’ SUPER 8 in the Best Score for a Fantasy/Science Fiction/Horror Film category. Turkish composer Pinar Toprak wins Best Score for a Documentary Film for her score to THE WIND GODS.

The Best Archival Release goes to the massive Warner Bros sixteen-disc, retrospective box-set THE DANNY ELFMAN & TIM BURTON 25TH ANNIVERSARY MUSIC BOX, which was housed in a Zoetrope box and included an exclusive historical book.

Cirque du Soleil plans one-time-only Oscar piece

Pada tanggal 17 Februari yang lalu, Associated Press mengabarkan bahwa Cirque du Soleil akan mengisi salah satu acara Oscar tanggal 26 Februari 2012 yang akan datang. Acara tersebut belum pernah ditampilkan Cirque du Soleil dan tidak akan ditampilkan lagi ya ya tapi yang lebih penting adalah.. Musiknya akan dibuat oleh Danny Elfman! Kalau menurut artikelnya, musiknya bukan akan dibuat tapi sudah dibuat, berikut kutipannya:

The three-minute performance at the Oscars on Feb. 26 will be among the international troupe's biggest yet, said Cirque du Soleil special events director Yasmine Khalil, featuring more than 50 artists.

Cirque du Soleil has a Hollywood-themed show now at the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars will be presented, but the performance for the awards telecast is "unique for this one evening" and not taken from any of the troupe's 22 productions playing around the world. After the Oscar show, the performance won't be presented anywhere again.

"The theme is very much in line with paying tribute to the movie-theater experience," Khalil said, adding it was different from "Iris," Cirque's show at the Kodak Theater, which is billed as "a journey into the world of cinema."

Like "Iris," the music for the troupe's Oscar performance was composed by Danny Elfman.

Danny Elfman to Score Blue Sky Studios’ ‘Leafmen’

Tanggal 10 Februari 2012 kemarin, situs Film Music Reporter melaporkan bahwa Kraft-Engel Management, agen musik ternama untuk film dan panggung meluncurkan situs terbarunya. Salah satu kliennya adalah Danny Elfman dan di bagian Danny Elfman tersebut terdapat PDF of Credits yang kelihatannya paling lengkap dalam mencantumkan semua karya Danny Elfman selama ini.

Di file tersebut terdapat keterangan film-film yang akan dibuat musiknya oleh Danny Elfman yaitu dari yang paling dekat rilisnya: Dark Shadow (11 Mei 2012), Men In Black III (25 Mei 2012), Frankenweenie (5 Oktober 2012), Oz: The Great and Powerful (8 Maret 2013) plus satu lagi yang belum pernah terdengar sebelumnya bahwa Elfman terlibat: Leafmen (17 Mei 2013)! The movie directed by Chris Wedge is based on the book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs by William Joyce about a troop of bugs that try to save a garden and have to battle an evil spider queen. The project is produced by James V. Hart (screenwriter of Hook, Contact and August Rush) and William Joyce (Robots). Elfman has previously worked on the Disney animated film Meet the Robinson, which was also based on a book by Joyce. Leafmen marks his first collaboration with Blue Sky Studios and Chris Wedge whose previous two major features have been scored by David Newman (Ice Age) and John Powell (Robots). The movie is set for a release on May 17, 2013 by 20th Century Fox.

IFMCA Award Nominations 2011

Award-winning composer-lyricist Schwartz talks about his hit musical

Tanggal 9 Februari yang lalu, situs mem-publish wawancaranya dengan Stephen Schwartz. Termasuk dalam wawancara tersebut adalah keterlibatan beliau di Houdini, berikut kutipannya:

Q: Danny Elfman was originally going to compose for "Houdini." How did you end up on the project?

A: I've had some meetings over time with the team trying to put it together. But it was only recently with the arrival of Aaron Sorkin as book writer that it really started to come together, and particularly was attractive to me because I'm such a huge admirer of his work. A picture like "Moneyball" might not be at first glance a topic that everybody in the world is interested in, but it was so well-written. He's just such a good writer, and when he takes on a project, he finds a way to make it really interesting and surprising and thought-provoking.

Q: How far along are you?

A: Basically we have worked out an outline. Just as with "Wicked," it took quite a while to figure out what the story was, and I think we have a pretty good handle on that now. And we're just starting to write. I actually have not written a note or a lyric yet.

WOLFMAN was one of those Hollywood projects where there are a lot of people involved in a process and they can't agree on a shared vision. When I joined the fray the movie had already been in postproduction for, I think, two years, so I was at the very end of this whole process at which point the various parties hadn’t been able to find one way of finishing this movie. I don't want to go too much into details about it but I was chosen by one of the parties to create a score for the movie that would make it more attractive to younger audiences. That's what I did and then apparently the decision was made that they wanted to be more of a classic movie rather than one directed toward younger audiences and that's what was eventually released. For me, it was a job like any other. There was some good music that will never see the light of day that was produced for it but that's how it goes. As long you get compensated for your work, I don't mind that that's part of this inexact process that happens in any creative sphere when you try things out. Ultimately somebody will have to make a decision and say this is how we’re positioning this movie, and that's what they decided for this one.

Elfman’s score is able to shoulder its way through a bunch of rap and rock songs (which are available on a separate songtrack album from Interscope) to really embellish the story’s warm heart with an engaging score. The action/battle moments are occupied by fairly typical slams of rockem, sockem percussive/brass/synth, but through it all Elfman’s subtler, humanistic melodies are woven, which personifies the human element behind the battling cyberbots and exemplifies the heartening father-son relationship that is restored through the competitive robot boxing process. Aside from the brass and electronically-infused percussion, Elfman employs acoustic guitar runs (“It’s Your Choice,” “Safe With Me,”), gentle female voice (“Why We’re Here,”) or both (“Bonding,” “Parkway Motel”), and a lovely string-and-piano wistful family theme (“Safe With Me,” “You Deserve Better”) to underscore the father-son reunion which is the film’s real story (as well as the developing romance between Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly’s characters, as well as the film’s underlying Americana vibe. The score’s main hero theme (“Charlie Trains Atom,” “Atom Versus Twin Cities,” the second half of “You Deserve Better”) reflects both the restored sparring robot Atom and the young lad who restores both Atom and his ex-boxer father’s dignity. The configuration of the main theme’s first six notes recall the opening tune of Neil Diamond’s song “Shiloh,” which is initially a slight distraction and certainly coincidental, but Elfman takes the melody elsewhere after that and formulates it into an energetic, cheer-inducing victory anthem as underbot Atom wins round after round against the bullybots, culminating in the happy triumph of “People’s Champion.” It’s also arranged into a variation for acoustic guitar, set among the family theme and voice melodies, in the poignant “Taking A Beating.” I found REAL STEEL to be an unexpectedly very good movie with terrific action, effects, and a true heart. Danny Elfman’s score augments its dignity and emotional grounding with a fine score that honestly conveys its sense of family affinity and celebration.
